About this tool

Markdown is a simple way to write formatted text using plain characters: # for headings, ** for bold, - for lists. Developers and writers use it for README files, documentation, notes and blog posts. This tool turns it into HTML that you can paste into a website or an email template.

It supports GitHub-style Markdown, including tables, task lists, strikethrough and fenced code blocks. The preview is shown inside a sandboxed frame, so scripts in the Markdown cannot run. The conversion uses the open-source “marked” library (MIT licence), which is served from this site rather than from a third party.

Frequently asked questions

Which Markdown flavour is supported?

GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM): everything in standard Markdown plus tables, task lists, strikethrough and autolinks.

What does Escape raw HTML do?

Markdown allows HTML tags inside the text. With this option on, those tags are shown as text instead of being passed through, which is safer if you do not fully trust the source.

Is the generated HTML sanitised?

No. The HTML is the direct result of the conversion. If you put Markdown from other people on your website, sanitise the HTML there or use the Escape option.

Can I convert HTML back to Markdown?

Not yet. This page works in one direction.
