About this tool

A slug is the readable last part of a web address, such as the “my-first-post” in example.com/my-first-post. Short, descriptive slugs are easier for people to read and share and give search engines a clear hint about the page.

This tool lowercases text, replaces accented letters with plain ones (café becomes cafe), turns symbols such as & into words, and joins the remaining words with a hyphen or underscore. Search engines generally treat hyphens as word separators, so the hyphen is the default.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use hyphens or underscores?

Hyphens. Google’s guidance is to use hyphens to separate words in URLs because they are read as spaces, while underscores are not.

What happens to non-English text?

By default the slug keeps only plain Latin letters and numbers. Tick Keep non-Latin letters to keep scripts such as Arabic, Persian, Cyrillic or Chinese; accents on Latin letters are still removed.

How long should a slug be?

Short and descriptive is best. Removing common words and setting a maximum length helps, and the tool will not cut a word in half.
