URL Encoder & Decoder
Make text safe to use in a web address, or turn %20-style codes back into readable text.
Type or paste text to encode.
How to use the URL encoder
- Choose Encode or Decode.
- When encoding, pick Component for a value that goes inside a link (such as a search term), or Full URL to encode a whole address while keeping its structure.
- Paste your text. The result appears immediately.
- Copy the result and use it in your link, code or browser.
About this tool
Web addresses can only contain a limited set of characters. Spaces, accents, symbols such as & and ? and non-Latin letters have to be written as percent codes, for example a space becomes %20 and é becomes %C3%A9. This is called URL or percent-encoding.
Component mode is what you need when you build a query string by hand, because it also encodes characters like & and = that would otherwise split your value. Full URL mode leaves those characters alone so the address still works.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Component and Full URL?
Component mode encodes every character that is not a plain letter, number or one of - _ . ! ~ * ' ( ). Full URL mode also keeps characters that structure an address, such as : / ? # & = and @.
What does the + sign mean?
In HTML form data, a + stands for a space. In other places it is just a plus sign. Tick Treat + as a space when you decode form data or query strings from forms.
Why do I see %25 in my link?
That usually means the text was encoded twice. The first pass turned a space into %20, the second turned the % into %25. Decode once and check again.
