Text Compare
Paste two versions of a text to see exactly what changed.
Add text to both boxes to see the differences.
How to use the text compare
- Paste the original version into the left box and the changed version into the right box.
- Choose how to compare: by lines for documents and code, by words for prose, or by characters for short strings.
- Read the result: green marks added text and red marks removed text. Unchanged lines are folded away in line mode.
- Use Ignore case or Ignore extra spaces to hide differences you do not care about.
About this tool
Comparing two texts by eye is tiring and unreliable. This tool finds the longest parts that both versions share and highlights the rest, so you can see edits in contracts, essays, configuration files or any text that went through several revisions.
Line mode shows whole lines that were added or removed and keeps unchanged lines out of the way. Word and character modes show the changes inline, which is better for spotting small edits inside a sentence.
Frequently asked questions
Which comparison mode should I use?
Use Lines for lists, code and documents where each line is a unit. Use Words to see edits inside paragraphs. Use Characters for short strings such as names or codes.
Is there a size limit?
Very large texts are compared quickly in Line mode. Word and character modes need more memory, so if you see a size message, switch to Line mode or compare smaller parts.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The comparison runs in your browser and neither text is sent to a server.
